blame it on the weather

moody mint pins Yesterday was the first rain we've experienced since moving back to LA and I'm sure that the grey morning skies and cool mornings of late have everything to do with my draw to these images.

It was just a light drizzle where we are but when I woke up there were already reports of two car accidents on the freeway that resulted in loss of lives. It's sad and crazy that even the smallest raindrops can throw LA into such havoc. Especially considering the types of torrential downpours we experienced in Malaysia where drivers still do 60+mph with no trouble at all. We're just not used to rain here...be safe out there, kids.

Now, before this post turns darker than the greys above (it is a Friday, after all) let's talk about why it looks different from my usuals. I rarely share things that are not my own photographs or designs but with so much work going on, I felt like mixing things up a bit and playing with a few of my favorite recent Pins. Call it a Friday Freebie if you will ... sometimes you just gotta go with whatever creative itch you've got, big or small.

Go have a great weekend and let yourself do things a little different. It's more fun that way.

last day, lasting memories

It's Wednesday morning in KL and I'm writing this as we zip up our luggage and get ready to go to the airport. Though one and a half years flew by in a blink of an eye, I leave feeling 100% fulfilled with our experience. It was quite the adventure with its many ups and downs but man did this place steal my heart.

London was a good teacher but in this jungle town I feel like I've really grown into the person that I'm meant to be for the next chapter of my life. That goes for us as a couple, too. There's nothing like experiencing changes, challenges, and moments of joy together to keep you on your toes and ready to take on the world.

I also leave with a very happy heart when I think about the beautiful friendships we made with locals and other expats who call KL home. They are wanderlust and adventurous just like us and I know that this is not goodbye, rather a 'see you later'.

One of those friends is the witty and talented Clare, who took the amazing photos above. I'm so thankful that she was able to capture these moments of Joe and me at KLCC park by our apartment just before we left. We don't have any photos like this as the ones we take ourselves usually only feature our heads and an outstretched arm in the frame! Such great keepsakes, thank you Clare!!!

Alright it's time to go ... see you later, KL. You were a treat.

Happy Friday, guys! Wow am I excited for the weekend. Even though I'm planning on getting some work done, I just love the fact that we'll be home. For all of the traveling we do I'm really quite the homebody. That's why I'm so excited to finally have framed all of the photo prints from my shop so we can enjoy them in our living room! I also had a little graphic fun with a photo I took of the Sydney Opera House. Looks kinda like a fan, doesn't it? The color is just the pop that we needed in here.

All perfect timing too since I just received a copy of our home feature in IKEA Malaysia's Live magazine (!!!). We had practically just moved in so it's nice to see what we've done to make it even more homey since then.

Enjoy your weekend!

crazy for kayu

I'm so excited to finally share some photos of my shoot for KAYU - gorgeous bags with a mission.

I met KAYU's founder, Jamie Lim, via Twitter and as luck would have it she's originally from Malaysia. She was in town over the holidays to visit family and take care of business (her clutches are hand made in South East Asia) so we were able to meet in person and collaborate for her Spring look book photos and graphic design. We hit it off immediately and I was in total awe of her designs. She has somehow accomplished making the traditional artistry of weaving look completely modern and sexy. And as if good looks weren't enough, a portion of sales is donated to perform sight-restoring surgeries in India and to purchase backpacks and school supplies for children in Cambodia. Win-win.

I had a blast walking around KL together with only a bag full of clutches and a determination to "get the shot" despite the hot day and hungry mosquitoes. Felt like quite the urban-jungle warriors at the end of the day!

I can't finish writing this post without mentioning the stall owners at Chow Kit Market. They thought we were nuts every time we asked "can I put this bag here and take a photo?". Sure, crazy ladies...go right ahead. The strange looks were totally worth it as my fave shot is the trio of clutches on the Durian scale. It doesn't get any more Malaysian than that.

{announcing} photo prints by anamu

New Prints by Ana Maria Munoz There was a good reason for my absence yesterday and the result is here...announcing photo prints from yours truly! It's been a long time coming and I'm so excited to be able to share some of my favorite snaps with you offline. I've chosen to work with a photo printing service called Fotomoto where you can order right off my page and they'll process and ship the prints directly to ya. Since I'm abroad and am often traveling, I found this service to be perfect for making sure that you get your prints in the most timely manner. If the interface is unfamiliar to you, don't worry, it's a simple and secure shopping widget/window that you can treat as if it were another tab on your web browser. I've used it to test the product and have been really happy with the results.

To celebrate the launch I want to offer three readers a 5x7in print of your choice. Yay free! To get in on this, first check out the shop and then come back to this post and tell me what your favorite print is and where you'd display it (ie home, office, etc). I'll pick three comments at random next Thursday, November 8 and announce the winners on Friday. Get browsing...or shopping!

Website Note: I intended to launch the shop on a different site but due to a few coding specs beyond my control, I've created a shop page through the blog for now. I might or might not have messed with some code in the process so if you are reading this and you see alignment issues on your screen (or anything else out of the ordinary) would you please be so kind and email (link in top sidebar) to let me know? Much appreciated!

at last

portfolio Remember my post about "owning" your title or whatever it is that you do? Well, I finally put together one of the things that makes being a freelance graphic designer and photographer a bit more legit in my book: a portfolio! It was such a satisfying and motivating experience to sort through what I have done and think about the work that I want to continue doing. It still has a lot of room to grow but it's a start. It's my start and I'm excited to share it with you.

Please check it out and do pass it along to any friends, family, and colleagues who might be interested in my work (word-of-mouth <3 is greatly appreciated!). Thank you for being a part of this new creative journey.

new city, we

palm leaves

Hello hello! How have you been? It's good to be back...writing, sharing, catching up. We arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday morning and despite having the airline lose one of six checked bags for nearly two days, everything went smoothly. We're all settled into our temporary serviced apartment as we wait for our first batch of home necessities to arrive via freight - I just pray that everything makes it over here and in one piece. In the meantime I'm loving living in a place where if we need honey for our yogurt and granola all we need to do is press a button. Also, I'm getting really spoiled with daily house keeping and a breakfast buffet with tons of cut fresh fruit (I'm the laziest when it comes to cutting my own but I will eat it all day long if it's there - anyone with me?).

It's day four here and while I can't say that I'm in love just yet (never mind the post title - I make a city work for it) I can tell you that I won't be lost for inspiration anytime soon . Between the lush vegetation, patterns and textures of modern buildings, and the juxtaposition of Islamic and Colonial British design everywhere you look, it's going to be pretty sweet. I think I'll be able to do an entire photo series on Islamic patterns found on pavements, fences, entryways...seriously, my geometric pattern-loving heart is in heaven.

We got into the local swing real quick by hanging out at ... uuhh...hate to say it...do I need to say it?...yeah, okay: at three different malls. There are so many malls here but we get it, it's just not very comfortable to do anything outside for longer than 30 minutes during the day. We'll just have to re-wire our anti-indoor shopping center brains and succumb to being mall rats. It's almost like being in Vegas where every Casino is a self-contained air-conditioned world. The three malls we visited had a post office, day care centers, art galleries, spas, gyms, full-serviced restaurants, medical clinics, movie theaters, you name it. You can practically live there and many people do. As difficult as this is to say, I may eventually set up office on the fourth floor Coffee Bean or Starbucks like the locals do. In LA or London this would have been cringe-worthy but until I find something more my style, I think it's gotta be my norm.

Another thing we did that we otherwise wouldn't was buy tickets for the local hop-on hop-off buses. You know, those double decker buses that every touristy city has that follows a points-of-interest route? We've always dismissed them by preferring to explore via foot and the local transport systems. However, with KL being a bit more spread out - and not the most pedestrian and public transpo friendly city - we opted to go for the big bus to get a lay of the land. It was a good move because we got a glimpse at Chinatown, Little India, the Lake Gardens, and other cultural and commercial areas that would have otherwise each been a full day trek. There's a lot to take in here - yes, obviously the cool sights but also the cultural norms and personal lifestyle adjustments. I've always been proud to say that I take change very well and adjust easily but let's face it, London was a piece of cake. KL is certainly very new and different but one comforting thought is that if any city-woes do arise, we're only a cheap airplane ticket and hour away from the most beautiful beaches in the world. They can cure anything, I'm sure.

happy friday!

enjoy your weekend. Last night we watched the snow fall while sitting inside a cozy pub; it was such a special London moment. On our walk home I was literally skipping down the street like a little five-year old trying to taste snow flakes on my tongue. Why wasn't everyone else doing the same thing?!? Joe was totally surprised by my reaction for obvious reasons but I couldn't help myself. Snow-fall is so magical, so pretty, so delicate...there's absolutely nothing like it. It felt like a dream.

I hope this weekend brings you some magic. Have a good one, guys!

This week's three rad links: • simple (and free) printable action sheets from creature comforts. we can all use a little extra motivation, right? • fries i won't feel guilty about eating - an awesome recipe for baked asparagus fries + dips from spoon fork bacon. • my friend matt nall shares one INCREDIBLE photo per day. this man has serious talent for capturing detail. do take a look.

happy friday!

love letter press blocks Better yet, Happy February! It's my favorite month of the year for three reasons: 1) the anniversary of when Joe and I met  2) Valentine's Day and 3) my birthday. Actually, we really don't care too much about Valentine's Day (it should be every day - duh) but since it falls smack in the middle of the other two, we include it in what we call Valen-Birth-Sary. We coined the term last year after the month filled up with celebratory plans, shared love notes, gifts....and well, it's now an official holiday in our household :)

As for my birthday, we'll be back in LA for a visit at the end of the month and I can't think of a better way to spend it than to be surrounded by family and friends.

I hope you get to spend time with your loved ones this weekend or at least have the chance to connect with them if you're not near. Have a good one!

Here are this week's three rad links: • a brilliant curation of food & fashion by miss mosssee the world with your little ones in tow with these great tips by oh happy day • the golden age of photography and why you should be a lover, not a hater by photoshelter

... and one BIG shout out to Bri of Designlovefest for sharing her fave finds from my shop on her incredibly inspiring blog. Thanks, Bri!!!

P.S. I'm going to work on a blog re-design all weekend so if you visit and it happens to look strange or is down, that's why. We'll see if I manage to pull it off for a Monday reveal!
