friday pic & pin by Anamu 25 Happy Friday, guys. For those of you who celebrated Thanksgiving - are you still totally stuffed? Can you please overnight some yummy leftovers? Pretty please?

As you can probably tell, I didn't have much time to plan a feast of our own but maybe we'll come up with something over the weekend. If not, I will definitely be getting crafty and will start decorating for Christmas. A little DIY I did for autumn was a flower votive using a ball of cotton twine - I know, so stupid simple but I love it!  You can see where I got the inspiration + more photos over at Poppytalk (plus check out their Black Friday & Cyber Monday handmade deals)

Cheers to the holiday season, I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

This week's three rad links...

• a gift guide that gives twice + i'm now officially obsessed with LemLem. love the way they're making Ethiopian textiles look and feel so current.

the house at night

sydney opera house at night sydney opera house at nightsydney opera house at night sydney opera house at night sydney opera house at night

As the last show ended and the crowds dispersed, our Opera Bar drinks were had and it was time to check out The House. By that point we practically had the entire place to ourselves so we took our time admiring every contour of the iconic venue. It really is beyond cool. This was the second time we explored a must-see spot by night and I think we'll keep at it in the future. I mean, when else can you do a little dance at a place like this with no one other than a security guard to witness your foolishness?

words worth repeating / 34

words worth repeating 34 by ana maria munoz--anamu No one is upset around here (and I hope you aren't either) but it's often too easy to take what we have for granted. With Thanksgiving happening in the States tomorrow let's all take a minute to give thanks for all of the good people and things in our lives. Because really, when it's all boiled down to the basics there is lots to be thankful for. Happy Thanksgiving, America!

a non-planning traveler's dream

urbanwalkaboutsurbanwalkabouts urbanwalkabouts

Whenever we board our flight to our holiday destination I look around and see other travelers fiercely clutching their Lonely Planet guide books to countries X & Y. I then have a moment of panic like "crap. I should have bought one of those, too" but then I realize that I love how we approach it. We aren't big on planning what to do and see when we arrive to our destination since maps don't make much sense until you're actually there anyway and we often go off of the day's weather and how late we stayed up the night before. Of course we pre-book our lodging in neighborhoods that we research for their ease of transport and available services but other than that, we figure that we'll see the major points of interest along the way and find our own little gems by happy surprise (ie. this rad little bar literally tucked inside of an alley).

However, for as much information that I don't collect before we depart, upon arrival you can bet that I'm the first person at the info kiosk loading up on every free brochure, map, and local magazine available. Those are my golden tickets to a city. Particularly the local independent weeklys that often feature ads and reviews for great cafes and shops, which often lead to great little neighborhoods. I was getting my fill of these in Melbourne when I found an Urban Walkabout for Melbourne City. It was a non-planner's dream because it suggested shops, galleries, restaurants, and bars all over the CBD that we could wander to and explore with a bit of local knowledge. Then I found more for other creative neighborhoods and I was hooked. The design, the layout, the simple and approachable information - these guys know what they're doing! In Sydney I found their "Style Seekers" publication (also free) and was even more impressed. They have curated itineraries from local artists and business owners and offer all of the basic information you need to feel the creative pulse of the city. At that point I finally downloaded their free App and, you guessed it, was really impressed.

I did cheat on Urban Walkabout a bit with Broadsheet and Time Out but there's plenty of local info to go around, right?

What kind of traveler are you? Do you plan everything you want to see and do or do you go with the flow?

holiday we

Hi guys, how are you? It feels like I've been away for so long! We loved our holiday in Australia and for the first time in our travels, I really felt like a local rather than a tourist. Maybe it's because I was born there or because Melbourne and Sydney each have familiar qualities from London and LA that I love (like pubs and good mexican food to name a few). Or maybe it had everything to do with forgoing a traditional hotel and booking local rooms in vibrant neighborhoods like Fitzroy and Darlinghurst via Airbnb. Whatever the reason, it was awesome. Melbourne was just the artsy and indie fix that I needed since it's so hard to come by in KL, and Sydney was sort of like a walk down memory lane through my parents' stories of the places and things that were once a part of our everyday lives. Joe and I found ourselves talking about what it would take to move there, what we'd do for work, what neighborhoods we'd live in; we do that a lot with the cities we like but this time it felt more plausible. The only downside is that Australia is SO far from everywhere else in the world so we'd have to be pretty sure that our travel bugs had more than fully been satisfied. That's a tough call to make at this point but with my citizenship there it sure is nice to have the option. Thanks for that, mom and dad ;)

friday pic & pin 24 Happy Friday, guys. We're off to Australia today (!!!) with Melbourne first and then Sydney. With all of the traveling we've been doing I'm thinking that we should probably get a globe to commemorate our adventures. Wouldn't this bamboo one be a good contender? I can't wait to be in the land down under, AKA my birth place. I won't be blogging while there but I will be instagraming my little heart out so be sure to follow along to see what we get up to. If you have any favorite spots for either city, I'd love the hear 'em!

Now, let's give out some photo prints from the new shop! The three readers, picked at random, who will receive a 5x7 print of their choice are...

mix tape november This month's mix tape would (and should have) been the soundtrack to this past weekend at home. Wake up, enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, plop onto the sofa, read a book, do some light chores, plop back onto the sofa, read some more....you get the picture. It's a little mellow and a little up beat, enjoy it as things wind down for the holiday season.

words worth repeating / 33

words worth repeating 33 by ana maria munoz--anamu Having an idea isn't enough and this quote couldn't be more perfect for what I'm going through right now. I'm not talking about anything related to graphic design, photography, blogging, or crafting...I'm talking completely uncharted territory that is equally terrifying and exciting. Though I've been taking steps for the past several months to get my idea off the ground, they weren't big or quick enough. At the rate I was going I was "sitting there" and making excuses for why that was. Not anymore. I want to be proactive and not let the unknown paralyze me from reaching something that I know is totally possible. Will it be easy? No, but something else that wont be easy is living with a "what if" hanging over my head if I don't give it my all and at least really try. Life is too short and awesome to get run over so let's stop sitting!

then and now

postcards from australia My parents are seriously cool and I have these postcards from their early days in Australia to prove it. They were sent to family in Colombia when my sister Monica was an "hormigita" or "tiny ant", as my dad wrote, well before I was born. My folks were two adventurous, young love birds who saw nothing but an opportunity to get more out of life. They lived an ocean away from their families, didn't speak the language fluently (to start), worked hard to keep a roof over their head and yet somewhere in between they somehow managed to start a family of their own. When I think of all of the incredibly beautiful - and incredibly challenging - things they went through for our family I literally break into tears. I'm so thankful for them, each and every day and they inspire me to no end.

It's always been their dream to take my sister and I back to Australia, to show us where we lived, where we played, where our family started. Unfortunately we haven't been able to go as a family yet but Joe and I will get the ball rolling this Friday. It'll be my first time back since we moved when I was a year and a half old so it will be completely new in one way yet completely familiar in another because of the stories and photos I grew up with. The photo on the bottom left of the postcard pile is tiny blond me, walking in the park near our apartment in Bondi Beach, Sydney. My mom and I did a google maps search for it while we were in LA together and she says that it looks like the park is still there. She also made me promise that I'd go to that very same spot and take a photo...from baby to lady. I promise mama. Anything for you.

weekend we

simple symmetry taking shelter from the rain next to an old shop house Hi guys, how was your weekend? Our was nice and relaxing. It's been very grey and rainy here so we stayed in, watched movies, baked cookies, and took care of work at our leisure. These are my only shots from the weekend during our one venture out...we were such homebodies! I'm glad that we rested though because come Friday we'll be packing up for holiday in Australia and I know that won't stop for a single moment there.

friday pic & pin 23 Thank you all SO so much for all of the love on yesterday's print shop launch! Feels great to have it up and open for you to enjoy. I think I'm going to frame a bunch of them and create a gallery above my desk; both as reminder of the things and places that inspire me and as tangible evidence that I can do anything that I set my heart on. I have some fun ideas for future print series so this is just the beginning!

Have a fantastic weekend.

{announcing} photo prints by anamu

New Prints by Ana Maria Munoz There was a good reason for my absence yesterday and the result is here...announcing photo prints from yours truly! It's been a long time coming and I'm so excited to be able to share some of my favorite snaps with you offline. I've chosen to work with a photo printing service called Fotomoto where you can order right off my page and they'll process and ship the prints directly to ya. Since I'm abroad and am often traveling, I found this service to be perfect for making sure that you get your prints in the most timely manner. If the interface is unfamiliar to you, don't worry, it's a simple and secure shopping widget/window that you can treat as if it were another tab on your web browser. I've used it to test the product and have been really happy with the results.

To celebrate the launch I want to offer three readers a 5x7in print of your choice. Yay free! To get in on this, first check out the shop and then come back to this post and tell me what your favorite print is and where you'd display it (ie home, office, etc). I'll pick three comments at random next Thursday, November 8 and announce the winners on Friday. Get browsing...or shopping!

Website Note: I intended to launch the shop on a different site but due to a few coding specs beyond my control, I've created a shop page through the blog for now. I might or might not have messed with some code in the process so if you are reading this and you see alignment issues on your screen (or anything else out of the ordinary) would you please be so kind and email (link in top sidebar) to let me know? Much appreciated!

to the cave

batu cavesbatu caves batu cavesBatu Caves

batu cavesbatu caves batu caves batu caves batu caves batu caves

Ancient limestone, trees, scurrying monkeys, and Hindu shrines - the Batu Caves felt a world away while being only forty minutes out of KL. The colorful steps with their layers of paint made the 272 step climb a bit easier and every now and then we'd stop to observe the monkeys. Not feed, just observe, because people who feed them are just asking for their hands to be mangled! I've never been inside anything like this grand cave turned religious temple before and with water from recent rainstorms trickling in through the cracks it felt like we had gone back in time. Sure it was touristy with trinket shops not quite fitting into the scenery but for a simple and free afternoon adventure it was great. There were a few people who were there to worship and I've heard that the Thaipsusam pilgrimage is quite the sight if you're there early in the year. I'm glad we got to experience it on a quiet day though, in all of its ancient cave glory.

to all of my east coast USA readers and to those who have loved ones there, i'm thinking of you and praying for a safe end to the storm and quick recovery. hope you're staying warm and strong. sending lots of love your way.

UntitledUntitled Untitled Untitled Untitled

Hi guys, how was your weekend? We had a hot one here but it didn't stop us from having a few adventures. We visited the Batu Caves just outside the city (full post tomorrow) and I experienced my first fish spa - eekk!. It was a mix of sensations with tiny sucks and pokes but I quickly got used to it and dare I say it, I kinda enjoyed it. The results weren't as baby-smooth as I expected but it was worth trying anyway for a good giggle. My friend Shannon has probably thrown up in her mouth by now (she's squeamish about feet and anything touching them) so if you share her sentiments then please accept my apologies. Tomorrow's post will be fish-feet free but you can definitely count on there being more monkeys ;)

friday pic & pin

friday pic & pin 22 Happy Friday guys! I'm so excited to enjoy KL this weekend...I'm really starting to fall in love with it here. I had a few key moments yesterday where I just thought "yes, this feels good" like when I helped guide a lovely couple visiting from Europe (felt like such a local), discovered a Colombian restaurant (hello soul food!), and enjoyed dinner under a canopy while it rained like crazy and the skies turned white with lightning. I recently made a list of things to see and do in/near the city and the goal is to do at least one of them each weekend that we are home. Top on the list is to visit a palm oil plantation so when I saw this vintage pattern of palm tree varieties I was instantly attracted to it. We'll see what we cross off the list this weekend. I hope you have a great one!

Living close to the equator has its benefits (like year-round flip flops and poolside lounging) but there's no doubt that I will miss the cool crisp air that comes with the Fall season. The way it feels on your face is so refreshing and I love that short window of time when all you need is a great cashmere sweater and a scarf. This is my current dream outfit for an Autumn day out in the city complete with a cup of hot cocoa to snuggle up with at night. Maybe I'll just crank up the A/C and make believe :)

quote 32 Last week I mentioned that I'm working on launching a print shop (woo hoo!). I also mentioned that I've been thinking/waiting to do it for nearly one year. What have I been waiting for? I don't know but I sure do love this quote for kicking my butt into action. Let's do this thang!

pop displays

neon tags One of the first things I noticed when we moved to Malaysia was the way that some small independent shops display product prices and information. These neon tags are everywhere and they literally make me smile every time I see them. How could they not?! They're bright, playful, and with great geometric shapes and cartoon-ish hands they're hard to miss and not appreciate. When I started seeing packs of them for sale at stationary shops I got really excited because I knew that I had to have them. I have no idea what I'm actually going to do with them but I'm quite happy with the collection that has developed. Do you have any ideas for putting these awesome tags to use, functional or as art?

Hi guys, how was your weekend? We had a great date night on Saturday with dinner, a concert with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and drinks next to the crazy-impressive Petrona Towers. I swear, they really know how to light those beauties! Sunday was equally as nice though much less fancy with grocery shopping, cleaning house, and organizing. The simple things that make all of the difference in enjoying your home, right?  Cheers to a great week ahead!

friday pic & pin 21 An upside to being sick this week? Having the excuse to sit on the couch and browse online for wedding dresses. I fell in love with this one by Parker and I could totally see myself wearing it again and again. That's what I'll be going for, a pretty dress that I can continue to enjoy even after saying "i do". Sparkles optional.

Have a great weekend!
