weekend, we

Kuala LumpurKuala Lumpur Kuala Lumpur Kuala Lumpur Kuala Lumpur Kuala Lumpur Kuala Lumpur Kuala Lumpur

Hi guys, how was your weekend? Mine was fantastic. I feel like I've turned a new leaf and am ready to really enjoy living here. I've started craving local food, I'm making new friends, and I'm starting to see the beauty in this totally imperfect city. I'm done criticizing what it's not and just want to enjoy it for what it is right now, what it is today. On Saturday we walked around Merdeka Square and the surrounding old part of town. We marveled at the giant flags draped everywhere and took time to appreciate the derelict yet beautiful buildings (see Singapore for their potential).

Between celebrating Malaysia's independence from British rule just over fifty years ago, and the Muslim festival of Hari Raya Aidilfitri (the end of Ramadan, the fasting month), KL is buzzing. It's been so fascinating to see the Malay Muslim version of Christmas decorations in the malls and try new foods that are only available during this time of year. There's so much to take in and I'm finally feeling 100% open to it. It feels good.

friday pic & pin 14 With everyone talking about Fall being just around the corner, I'm psyching myself up for 24/7 summer living. It's a world of difference from last year when I barely saw the sun so this time around I'm definitely thankful to be closer to the equator.

This chair would be my perfect "endless summer" piece; reminiscent of the rattan furniture that Malaysia is known for but totally modern in material and with a retro design twist. I can imagine the shadows it casts while out on a sunny patio or inside a dining room with an overhead lamp. It's rocking my world, it really is.

Hopefully I find more endless summer inspirations while out and about this weekend. Have a good one and stay cool!

Last month I kicked off the new series Let's! with a weekend escape outfit but today it's all about the home - it's so fun to play house! I keep finding myself gravitating to clean and interesting lines and mixing them with organic elements and pops of unexpected art. The stacked cardboard lampshade and the playful PVC place settings that resemble blobs of paint (at least they do to me) couldn't be more different but I love them together. I'm so sad that I missed the place settings on sale via Presive.com but I'll find another way to get my hands on them, yes I will. And how cute is that little giraffe wine cork? It's made in South Africa which is extra special since that's where I really fell in love with them, the most majestic animals ever. Elephants and hippos more your thang? They've got you and your wine bottle covered, too.

a simple i do

Untitled I was sorting through my photo library when I stopped on this one of Joe and I in Palm Springs just before moving to London. It was one of our last So Cal hurrahs and I remember feeling so happy and at peace that weekend. From then on it was going to be just him and I and as difficult as it was to think of the things and people I was leaving behind, I knew that being anywhere with him was going to be home.

Now that we're settled into our new and second home, Joe and I can start thinking about where and how we want to get married. There hasn't been much time to think about details since he popped the question in February but the good thing is that there really won't be any details to think about. Why? Because we're keeping it simple.

In a world where the average wedding costs $27,000 and takes tons of energy and time to plan, we're going to opt for something more our style. I'm still amazed that there's anything to opt for since up until February I was convinced that we would never get married, at least in the technical sense. In every other sense of the word, we already were (and are). We share a home, share finances, share the same values, goals, hopes, and dreams, and most important we have a life-long commitment to each other. Getting married was something we spoke of should we one day want to do something symbolic or need to for legal purposes, it was never a goal for our relationship, a dealmaker or breaker. All we wanted was to be together and that's precisely what we were doing. In my mind I had officially said "I do" when I agreed to move to London with him.

I'm sharing this because in the blog world my way of thinking is not the norm and I want to offer a different perspective. I may be committing blog suicide by writing this but hey, it's my blog and it's my day! Like how I threw that classic Bridezilla in there? Yeah, those words will never actually come out of my mouth because it is just one day. We''ll still be the same people, we'll still feel the same way, and life will go on as usual.

The interesting thing is that I do drool over beautifully made wedding dresses and I do find inspiration in creative reception stylings. But, for some reason when it comes to me, to us, I just can't get into it…not like I used to. Before meeting Joe I fantasized about my dream wedding - the dress, the cake, the fireworks - yes, literal light up the sky fireworks. As little girls we're practically bred to want BIG on our wedding day, anything less is not worthy of our princess status. Well, I got a little older and realized that I had been dreaming about the wrong thing. Instead of dreaming about a healthy and loving relationship and a lifelong partner, I was planning an elaborate prom night with a faceless groom. My priority was on looking like a Hollywood starlet and partying like a rock star. Nothing wrong with either of those things  (I like both very much) but once I met the guy, the right life partner for me, all of a sudden the BIG one day event, and all of the expenses and energy that go along with creating it, didn't seem all that important to me.

As soon as we got engaged I knew that I was going to have to be quick in setting the expectations from my friends and family. I felt like I was expected to come out screaming "I'M GETTING MARRIED!", have a glow about me, and frantically start scouting locations and picking out linens. Remember that episode of Sex And The City when Miranda finds out that she's having a boy and everyone expects her to be all like "OMG I'm having a boy, YAY!" but she's actually really chill about the whole thing? That's how I felt. After the initial shock and dose of euphoria I felt totally normal and calm, I actually coded my blog that night (yep, very sexy). Nothing was different other than the fact that I had a gorgeous diamond ring on my finger. The man I love was still by my side as always, the man who made a grand gesture by giving me something pretty and symbolic of our time together - past, present, and future. I can't wait to say our vows and add that experience this chapter of our lives, however and wherever we choose to do it. And while it will be a very special day, the date that really counts in my book is the day that we met. That is what changed our lives, everything after that is just part of our story.

Hello, how was your weekend? Our was pretty uneventful so I figured I'd share something really awesome from last weekend in Singapore: Kinetic Rain. We learned about this art installation after clicking around the Vimeo feature on Apple TV and were completely in awe. On departure from Changi Airport we made a beeline to Terminal 1 to see it in person and wow did our jaws drop! We stood there for twenty minutes watching the silent dance...completely mesmerized. It's the coolest art installation I've ever seen. The. Coolest.

friday pic & pin

friday pic & pin 13 Happy friday guys! It's been a busy week but I'm not complaining. I still haven't done much with my office nook so when I saw this vintage + modern work setting I knew that I had found my inspiration. I already have the antique wood table (though would never think of painting it, Joe would kill me), a nice black chair has been on my list, and I do love black and white for artwork. That abstract painting is too awesome for words but the shop it's from is currently down for a re-launch next month (such a tease). However, it did give me the idea to unpack the vintage photos I bought last year in London's Camden Market. Do you remember the DIY wall decor I made with them? I think they'll look great above my desk but I might try a new display method to keep things fresh.  Do standby.

I hope you have great weekend finding inspiration all around ya!

I was a big-time commuter in LA before moving closer to work and public transportation options. While I can't say that I miss having a car, I do miss the long periods of time when it was just me and my music. There's something about driving that makes everything sound and feel better, isn't there? To satisfy my driving nostalgia I decided to create a playlist of songs from my college days to now that would make me smile, bob my head, and cheer me up even in the worst of traffic jams. That's why there's 17 tracks instead of the usual 10 ;)

Quote 21 It's August 1st and I didn't finish all of my July goals - shame on me. At first I was really upset with myself but then I got online and saw yesterday's quote on Howdy Day!. The moments I chose to cuddle with Joe over working in solitude with my laptop or went out to explore something new instead of drafting personal projects at home, those are the moments that true living is all about. I'm good at knowing when I have the wiggle room to play and relax but I'm equally good at beating myself up if the wiggling exceeds its intended time limit. It's a difficult balance when your home is your office but the good thing is that things do get done and the world doesn't end. If the wiggle-guilt ever crawls back I'll just remember that this quote gives me permission to live a little...or a lot.

singapore 3 singapore 4singapore 10singapore 2 singapore 11singapore 5singapore 8 singapore 9 singapore 7singapore 6 Singapore has incredible modern architecture but of course, I also found a ton of inspiration in an older part of town called the Arab Corner (I think that's it, please correct me if I'm wrong). The neighborhood's pride is evident by the impeccable upkeep of their old shop houses, vibrant colors, and collection of traditional fabric stores and cafes mixed in with new indie boutiques and bars. I loved seeing bits of the local art community, too. From artists at work in a tiny gallery to graphic murals on the street, it's amazing how much art can bring a street or neighborhood to life. If you're lucky enough to be there during Ramadan as we were, be sure to take advantage of the food stalls in front of the mosque. Devotees lined up to buy their post-sundown meals but there were plenty of tourists like us taking advantage of the offerings. We weren't sure if it was acceptable to eat in front of others who were fasting so we tucked into a side alley and chowed down in semi-privacy.  It's a good thing that the streets in Singapore are so sparkly clean ;)

weekend, we

singaporesingapore singapore singapore singapore singapore singapore singapore singapore singapore singapore singapore

Hi how was your weekend? We had so much fun in Singapore, I absolutely loved it. It was so nice to be back in a pedestrian-friendly city and just pop in and out of shops and stop for drinks and food along the way. Singapore couldn't be more opposite from KL in the overall safety factor and well-thought-out city planning. After my first venture out by the river I thought "oh man, can we just stay here and not go back?". It's awful to compare but for the first time since we left London I felt 100% safe and comfortable being by myself. And while there is still a mall on every other block, unlike KL there are a lot more street-level storefronts and walkable shopping/dining options.

The only obvious negative is that it's not the cheapest city to play and live in so after a shamefully pricey and touristy dinner at Clarke Quay, we resolved to finding more reasonable spots (and thankfully we did). The rest of the weekend was spent hanging out in the Arab Corner and checking out the big flashy sites of Marina Bay. On our last day met up with Tanya, a blog reader who lives in Singapore with her family. We connected over being LA Expat girls and we've been in touch via email and instagram ever since. She showed us a different part of town that only further solidified how great the city is and then Joe and I took a rest at the gorgeous and historic Raffles Hotel before heading to the airport.

I didn't want to leave but on the drive home, with miles and miles of palm tree groves and native forest, I realized that Malaysia is a great place to be, too. It may not have all of the western comforts and perks that Singapore does but that's okay. We are in South East Asia, after all, and I want to experience all of it.

Happy Friday, everyone. Will you be watching the Olympics this weekend? I'm hoping to catch a re-play of the opening ceremony since we forgot to set the recording on our home TV. With all of the mayhem surrounding the events I can't decide whether I'm happy or sad that we're not there but nevertheless I'm excited to see glimpses of the places we came to know and love.

We'll be in Singapore through the weekend and so far so good. It's a world of difference from KL from what I can tell and it probably wasn't a good idea to come (because it is so nice). Will share more on that next week.

Until then, have a good one!

We're off to Singapore today and we've also booked our first beach getaway in Vietnam next month. Needless to say, my travel bug is very happy!

I thought this would be the perfect time to introduce a new bi-monthly series called Let's. In each Let's Getaway post I'll pick a destination and share what I'd pack if only my wardrobe were so lucky. Next will be Let's Play House that will be all about well, playing house! Since we can only do so much with our temporary living arrangement I figured that I might as well dream a little and share the inspiration along the way.

This first getaway is a bit of a cheat since we're actually going to Vietnam but I couldn't resist dreaming up my perfect packing list. That dress - it kills me!

Besides curating my favorite things, a goal for the Let's series is to highlight pieces from independent designers or companies that produce locally, use fair trade, are eco-minded  and/or practice social ethos within their business models. Of course high-street brands may make an appearance but only if I believe in their quality and longevity beyond seasonal trends.

I'm really excited to put my Pinterest and web-window shopping sprees to use. I hope you enjoy it!

Quote 20 It wasn't until after college that I began to really view the world through a different lens.  A lens of adventure, appreciation, and intrigue. I had re-discovered my hometown of Los Angeles and threw myself into enjoying everything it had to offer from museums, distinct neighborhoods, to quintessential moments like watching the sun set over the Pacific. I've been trying to get back to the explorer me that made LA seem new again, made London home, and will make KL the experience it's meant to be. Going to Jalan Alor for dinner this weekend was my personal attempt at embracing what we have here and relishing it...and that I did. It still may be a while before I feel 100% comfortable going out on my own (due to this) but I know that it's just a matter of time. Until then I don't mind waiting for the weekend to explore with my hunny. I shouldn't get to have all of the fun, after all.

Here's to enjoying the the journey whether near or far!

Malaysia is known for its food but between our comfy sofa, Apple TV, and epic grocery buys, we've become quite the homebodies with dining and entertainment. On Saturday it was time to break the pattern and finally make our way to Jalan Alor, one of KL's most well known spots for street grub.

There was all sorts of good stuff: Malaysian, Chinese, Thai but instead of opting for a big meal from one restaurant, we went to different stalls and built our own feast.  I loved trying all the new-to-us satays from squid to mushroom...there's not much that they won't put on a stick! For dessert I went for durian ice cream. Durian, the King of Fruit as they call it here, is known for being stinky. I can't say that I understand where some people's repulsion comes from but I do know that I loved that ice cream.

The bustle, the smells, the sense of a mini-adventure...I can't wait to try more food, new streets, and leave the comfort of our blue sofa more often. Much more often.

Hi, how was your weekend? We took it easy at home with some pool time, light chores, yummy baking, and matinee movie screenings (gotta love iTunes). On Saturday I had a major craving for street food so we headed to Jalan Alor. It's a main tourist street but it's close to our place and most of the restaurants have pictures of the meals - very helpful so that you don't miss something delicious due to language barriers. We ate our weight in satay and then wrapped up the evening with a few drinks at a nearby bar. It was so nice to get out and do something local...it's too easy to take it for granted when you live here. Will share more on Jalan Alor tomorrow!

If you're interested in the banana bread recipe I use, this is it. Crazy simple and easy - just the way I like it.

friday pic & pin

friday pic & pin 11 We have been itching to put some art our walls so maybe we'll get ambitious this weekend and buy the supplies to make it happen. As made obvious by my Pinterest Art Thou Wonderful board, I'm really drawn to impressionist and abstract style paintings and I'm loving this one by Kristy Gammill. If only it were available as a print! I could really use a dose of bright inspiration in my office nook...any recs on websites or artists I should check out for good selections? I have a difficult time committing to art since there's so much to choose from but  guess I could start by printing my own photographs. It would make a fun weekend project and I do like them. Hhhmmmm, food for thought...

Have a wonderful weekend and see ya back here on Monday!

{diy} ikat inspired beach bag

I love a good basic bag that will stand the test of time. This one from MUJI comes kinda close to the coveted quality of Filson so I was very excited to snatch it up and bring it home. The simplicity of the canvas and leather is great but since it's summertime, I thought that I'd have a little fun with an easy DIY. I chose Ikat weaving as my design inspiration and am so happy with the results! The colors, the lines, all very subtle but they give the piece a totally different personality. I think I might do this in the future with simple cotton totes as re-uasble gift bags...lots of possibilities.

If you're not familiar with MUJI (I wasn't until we moved to London) they are an awesome Japanese company that keeps things focused on simple yet practical design. They have barely made their way to the US with stores in NYC but I hope that they expand if/before we move back. I can't imagine life without them now - they're like a small-scale, more earthy, back-to-basics Ikea. I couldn't find my exact bag in their web store but they have a ton of great styles to pick from. Happy stitching!
